They've started. The lovely Class 442 Wessex Electrics have, finally, been put back into active service, operating London-Gatwick Airport-Brighton services at peak times.
These magnificent machines, holders of the world speed record for third rail electric vehicles, are seen in this post in their old, SouthWest Trains livery.
Most of these photos were taken around Southampton, the territory for which these magnificent machines was designed.
Based on the Mk3 carriage, British Rail's finest coach design, these airconditioned lovelies were quiet, smooth and fast, scheduled to operate at 100mph.
These machines look sleekly designed for speed.
Then-Rail Minister Tom Harris lied* about them: he denied that any trains were being kept in storage at a time when around two dozen of these beautiful machines were being left to rot in storage sidings at Eastleigh.
The only thing better would be to have them back in their magnificent NetworkSouthEast express liveries again:
* It's possible that he didn't lie. In which case he's a moronic, incompetent twat who had no idea what he was talking about.
